Reflection:
Change is positive and presents us as leaders with new challenges and opportunities to improve. Since my last entry, there has been several changes in both my personal and professional life. I have continued to embrace change and seek learning opportunities. In addition, I have gained a greater understand of change and how people deal with change (Bascal's Cycle of Change).
Seeking input from others and being receptive to their ideas is very critical in the planning process in my department. I have learned to be receptive in my role as a supervisor and have gained a greater understanding of people and relationships. When planning events in my department, I will work with my students to ensure events are welcoming, non-discriminatory, and inclusive to all students. Personally, I have strive to use more inclusive language in my emails, letters, and documents to students, staff, and other departments. When faced with a challenge, I will reflect on the literature from class and consult my supervisor on the best course of action. My passion for working with students in higher education and love for learning has truly made me a lifelong learner.
Fall 2010
1. Values change as the source of opportunity for improvement.
I embrace change in the workplace as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Change is inevitable and something I experience frequently at work. In the past two years I have been employed with my current employer. I have been in three different positions and moved office locations three times. I have taken on additional responsibilities and volunteer opportunities in the community to expand my knowledge. I hope to continue to thrive with change and seek opportunities to advance my learning and improve my skills.
2. Displays the ability to understand people and relationships and is receptive to the ideas of others.
I work closely with my clients and encourage open communication. I feel that I am approachable and my clients can come to me with any questions or concerns they have. I am always willing to help and work with my clients and colleagues to find solutions. I strive to understand people and who they are. I welcome feedback, am open to ideas and willing to go above and beyond to help others succeed. To grow, I will strive to encourage more communication, engagement and be more open to ideas in the workplace and my personal life.
3. Shows a willingness to implement non-discriminatory access, accommodations and assessments.
I work with a variety of people who have different wants and needs. However, I ensure all participants have access to the same resources and benefits. I will make accommodations for my clients/customers as needed to ensure they are able to utilize the resources that are available to them. Assessments are common in the program I work with and used to assist clients in choosing a program of study and/or evaluate their math and reading skills. To better accommodate clients, assessments can be taken on the computer or on paper. I have always strive to operate in an environment that is non-discriminatory and accommodating, and will continue to do so.
4. Demonstrates empathic understanding of diversity in all domains.
Diversity is most often refer to as differences in race, gender and age. However, diversity encompasses much more and ranges anywhere from cultural differences to fundamental values. I encourage conversations and discussions on diversity in all domains. I have a great appreciation for diversity and feel empathy is one of my strongest qualities. During my undergraduate study, I was actively involved in campus events, celebrations, and discussions on diversity and equity but have not been able to do so as a graduate student. To grow, I will strive to be more involved in campus events, issues and concerns related to diversity.
5. Regularly reflects upon the philosophical assumptions, ethical principles and rationales that guide one’s practice.
I feel I am able to reflect upon my assumptions, ethical principles and rationales to guide me in my decisions. As a case manager, I have to articulate/communicate policies and procedures to my clients and ensure they understand what is expected of them. When a decision or change is enforced/implemented I ensure my clients understand the rationale behind the decision/change. I take responsibility for my actions and make sure my clients are being served and treated fairly.
6. Understands oneself as a learner and values learning as a core capacity.
I constantly challenge myself at work and in my personal life. I seek learning opportunities and take on additional responsibilities to improve my knowledge, skills, and abilities. I value myself as a learner and feel learning is continuous and necessary in this ever-changing world. Coming back to school made me realize that in the short time I was away I had lost touch with myself and what is going on in the world. Continuous learning is essential. I hope to advance my learning and continue to seek opportunities.
