MS Educational Leadership Program Goals Self Assessment
Fall 2012
1. Envision and guide organizational change. 2. Communicate effectively, engage constituents, develop people and build community. 3. Advocate and promote equity for diverse populations and respect for individuals. 4. Integrate theory, data, research and ethical standards into the context of one’s practice through continuous learning.
Reflection:
Through this program and key influences in my life, I have been able to guide organizational change by introducing new programming in my area and becoming a change agent. I have learned the importance of communicating effectively and encouraged my students to seek leadership opportunities and have included them in the planning process of events and activities in my department. This not only encourage involvement from students but provides opportunities for students to grow. I have also become more aware of social justice issues by attending trainings and workshops (SAFE training, Diversity and Communication training, etc.) on campus and have encouraged others to do the same. The theories and concepts I have learned throughout my graduate studies have been integrated into my leadership style and work.
Fall 2010
1. Envision and guide organizational change.
I have always been open to change and feel change is necessary for a company/organization to grow and evolve. My current employer is going through a separation. Along with the separation, change followed. I have encouraged ideas, offer my insight on improvements, recommended strategies on how to better serve our consumers, and work as a team to solve problems/find solutions. I believe change involves the whole company and must be supported by its employees in order to be successful. As a fairly young and small organization, I feel it has encouraged creativity and operates openly. However, we are still growing and there are more changes to come. An area I can improve in is to continue to effectively communicate changes to the people we serve and partnering agencies we work with (who may be directly/indirectly affected by the changes).
2. Communicate effectively, engage constituents, develop people and build community.
As a case manager it is important that I build healthy relationships with the community, technical colleges, universities and our partnering agencies. I refer many of my clients who are either dislocated or low income to many of the programs and services available in the local community meeting their needs (DVR, Veteran Services, W2 program, Title V program, Transition Specialist at FVTC, goodwill industries, food pantry, etc.).
We work with our partnering agencies to ensure customers are being served and resources are utilized. Through training and workshops we are able to help customers upgrade their current skills, and develop job search and basic computer skills. I communicate with my clients over the phone, via email and/or mail to ensure their needs are being met. To improve communication and continue to build relationships, I hope to engage in and support more community activities and events.
3. Advocate and promote equity for diverse populations and respect for individuals.
As a Hmong woman, I try to educate others about my culture but also strive to learn and understand other people’s culture, beliefs and ideas. I support and try to promote diversity as much as possible. I have encouraged others (family, friends, etc.) to attend and participate in workshops and events addressing respect, diversity and equity. I have a great respect for others and treat people with care and kindness. I feel in order to move diversity forward people must be willingness to understand other people, and their culture, condition, situation and ideas. I will strive to actively promote and encourage diversity and equity more in the community and workplace.
4. Integrate theory, data, research and ethical standards into the context of one’s practice through continuous learning.
This is the first course I have taken in the educational leadership program so I feel I have not been exposed to or know many theories. I have strived to apply though what I have learned so far to the workplace. For example, Bascal’s cycle of change has helped me better serve my clients. It assisted me in understanding where my client may be in the cycle of change and how to engage and work with them depending on the stage they are in. I hope to gain more knowledge of student development and adult learning theories throughout the program and my research. I will strive to continue to integrate theory, data, research and ethical standards into the context of my practice through continuous learning.
